We’re delighted to announce that our project Anne’s Art Studio has been shortlisted for the Structural Timber Awards 2026 in the Custom and Self Build category.
Designed by Richmond Bell Associate Director Matthew Mudd, the studio was created in response to a simple but important client brief: to provide a calm, light-filled space for her art, adjacent to her home in suburban Salisbury.
Timber is central to the project, both structurally and visually. The studio was constructed using an Ecologic SIPs timber system, providing the primary structure and a highly efficient building envelope. Externally, charred Japanese cypress cladding gives the building a distinctive, natural character and helps it sit comfortably within its garden setting, while contrasting with the neighbouring brick house.
The use of timber continues into the detailing and interiors, creating a warm, tactile atmosphere that complements the calm nature of the space. Large windows and a carefully positioned skylight bring in generous natural light, while views across the garden connect the studio with its surroundings.
We were also pleased to see that Ecologic SIPs has also been shortlisted for Manufacturer of the Year, recognising the contribution their timber construction system has made to projects such as Anne’s Art Studio.
For us, the project demonstrates how thoughtful timber construction can support both sustainable design and a strong sense of place, creating a peaceful and inspiring environment tailored specifically to the client’s needs.
We look forward to celebrating with the other shortlisted practices, manufacturers and project teams at the Structural Timber Awards 2026 later this year.
