New Forest Planning Approval

February 2026

Planning permission secured for contemporary timber-clad new home in the New Forest

Richmond Bell Architects are delighted to announce that New Forest National Park Authority have granted planning permission for a contemporary five-bedroom home, marking an important milestone for both our client and project team.

Working closely with Atlas Planning, we guided the scheme through the New Forest National Park planning process, securing permission for a new dwelling that provides additional accommodation while remaining subservient to the main house, for which we also recently received planning permission as a replacement dwelling. The proposal balances contemporary architecture with sensitivity to its rural context, delivering sustainable and high-quality family living that complements the existing property.

The building is reached via meandering garden paths, enhancing the experience of arrival and reinforcing the home’s connection to its surroundings. Its design takes the form of two distinct timber-clad wings, connected by a lightweight glazed link with a green roof. This composition breaks down the overall mass of the house and allows the building to sit comfortably within the landscape, reflecting the character and scale of traditional forest outbuildings. The link opens views through to a tranquil reflection pool and strengthens the relationship between architecture and nature.

Both wings are defined by striking vaulted pitched roofs, creating generous internal volumes and a sense of openness. The south wing accommodates additional living spaces and opens onto an outdoor terrace that is shaded by an extension of the timber roof trusses. The north wing contains the bedrooms, split across two floors, with the master bedroom benefitting from a balcony offering framed views across the woodland.

A restrained palette of natural materials, including vertical timber cladding and extensive glazing, were carefully selected to ensure the house blends harmoniously with the New Forest landscape. The green roof enhances biodiversity and supports sustainable design principles, helping the home meet the expectations of modern, low-impact living within a protected setting.

New Forest Planning Permission

Securing planning permission for a new home in the New Forest can be complex, particularly within the National Park. This project demonstrates how thoughtful contemporary architecture, clear planning strategy and early collaboration with consultants can deliver a successful outcome.

If you are considering building a new home in the New Forest, designing a contemporary house in a sensitive rural setting, or seeking planning permission within the New Forest National Park, our team would be pleased to discuss how we can help bring your project forward.
