Structural Timber Awards 2019

September 2019

Richmond Bell project The Studio was a finalist in the 2019 Structural Timber Awards

Richmond Bell entered The Studio into the Structural Timber Awards in the Private Housing category, in conjunction with Carpenter Oak.

The Structural Timber Awards recognised excellent design and construction across the timber industry and are judged by an independent panel of experts.

Our entry featured the use of timber in the project and how it was carefully chosen for both aesthetic and structural reasons. The wood was chosen to contrast with the reclaimed stone facade of the neighbouring Georgian Old rectory but also to blend in with its surroundings in a National Landscape (Area of Natural Beauty). The varying widths of the cladding gave the Studio a contemporary feel, and the wood chosen will eventually fade to timber. Wooden internal trusses enabled the Studio to open up to the roof, giving it a feel reminiscent of an old barn. We also highlighted the sustainability of the timber chosen, both in terms of its source and construction methods which minimised environmental impact. Internal timber was reclaimed from the Old Rectory, further increasing the sustainable ethos of the project.
