Salisbury Civic Society Conservation Award

January 2021

Richmond Bell project, The Old Rectory, was awarded a Salisbury Civic Society Conservation Award 2021.

Judging for the awards took place in October 2020. A panel consisting of Susanna Denniston of Salisbury Museum, lay committee member Lynne Pearson, Lynda King from Wiltshire Council and historic environment consultant Elaine Milton visited the Rectory. They were accompanied by Richard Deane from the Civic Society. The panel learnt how the building was carefully restored to a family home, and a new Georgian-style kitchen wing added.

The panel thought that the new kitchen wing and new front gable improved the look of the original building. They felt that ‘the total achievement matched that of the adjacent pool building, a winner of an award in the previous year’s New Buildings scheme’. Although unable to go inside the building, the panel were also impressed by the quality indicated in photographs.

The Awards are usually announced at the Society’s New Year Party but unfortunately this was unable to go ahead due to Covid. We hope to celebrate the event at some point in the future. In the meantime, the Civic Society will provide RBA, WB Design & Build (the main contractors on the project), and the clients with certificates to mark the Award.
